Cathy Gugerty is a senior instructor in the Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass
Communications. Professor Gugerty has been teaching at the University of South Florida since
2010. She is a 30-year veteran of broadcast television with vast experience in news, production,
branding, image promotion, media planning, and public relations.
For the past eight years she has overseen the daily production of Florida Focus. The daily news break airs
on WEDU TV, Tampa’s public television station. It is reported, written and produced on deadline
by students. She works with students on all aspects of producing the news breaks – editorial, directing, technical directing, audio, graphic, and camera operations.
Through her career, Professor Gugerty helped clear the way for women in local television. She was one of the first women to step into the position of director. She held the position of vice president and general manager at WDEF TV in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before moving to the Tampa area to pursue teaching.
Previously, she held the position of director of marketing for the Media General Broadcast Group, working the with Media General stations to ensure high quality marketing and promotion. Prior to that, she worked as director of promotion and marketing for WESH-TV in Orlando, FL. She also served as director of broadcast services at WTNH-TV in New Haven, CT., managing the promotion, programming, production, and community service
