Mass Communications Alumni 1980s

Ann Berger Brown (1980) is raising a son and a daughter in Costa Mesa, Calif. She has lived in Southern California for 18 years.

Catherine A. Curry (1980) is a sales director for Time Inc. New Media in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Kerry Phelps Dale (1980) worked at the bi-monthly thoroughbred and breeding magazine, SPUR, in advertising, circulation and marketing. She later became publisher, editor and finally part owner before quitting to raise her three children.

John M. Dederen (1980) went on to earn his Ph.D. in history at the University of Alabama in 1988 and was a post-doctoral fellow at Yale, 1988-89. He has published two books and currently teaches at Houston's Community-Technical College.

Cherie Diez (1980) is a St. Petersburg Times photographer. She illustrated the series, titled "Angels and Demons," that won Times writer Tom French the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing over 150 other entries. She also illustrated a 1994 Pulitzer Prize-winning feature series for the Times.

Cynthia Marusarz Dobyns (1980) opened a public relations and marketing firm in Naples in 2001 after nearly three years as director of public relations for the Registry Resort and Edgewater Beach Hotel in Naples. She has been employed in the communications field for more than 20 years, beginning her career at the St. Petersburg Times, then moving to Fort Lauderdale to edit South Florida Living magazine. She also managed a public relations firm in Alexandria, Va., where she handled corporate brand publicity for Marriott's Conference Center division, as well as other travel and hospitality industry accounts. As a publicist specializing in the travel industry, she has represented luxury resort destinations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. In addition, she has worked on special events for the island of Jamaica and, as a Florida affiliate of Edelman, promoted Mexico as a travel destination through the Miami-based Mexican Government Tourist Office. She is the 2003-2004 President of the PR Association of Collier County.

Terrell D. Flynn (1980) owns H&F Management, a heavy equipment provider in Lakeland.

John E. Fox (1980) is an executive producer for CNN Headline News. He worked for WPEL television in West Palm Beach as a tape editor and later became 11 p.m. producer. He was also 6 p.m. producer for WCPX in Orlando.

Greg Gardner (1980) is chief executive officer and president of Wide Angle Productions in Fort Pierce. As a freelance videographer making television commercials and marketing videos, he has won three Addy awards and he has covered seven Olympic Games. Previously he worked as an editor, photographer, reporter and columnist for a weekly newspaper and as a photographer and editor for a television station.

John Giliberti (1980) was a radio newscaster until he went to law school in 1989. He is now the assistant city attorney in Rockford, Ill.

Mark Guempel (1980) wrote medical ad copy before going back to school. Now a senior programmer, he develops software.

Bonnie S. Hayflick (1980) owns a public relations firm in Jacksonville. She started her career at WUSF television in Tampa as a producer and continued to ad agencies before she found Bonnie Hayflick Public Relations Counsel.

Elizabeth Hicks (1980) works in the news department of WFLA television in Tampa.

Cynthia Barczak Lane (1980) is an attorney who also is an adjunct instructor at the University of Tampa and a freelance writer. She formerly worked as a reporter for the Tampa Tribune and WFLA television.

Glenn Marston (1980) was named editorial page editor of The Ledger in Lakeland in 2006. He oversees the newspaper's opinion pages, columnists appearing on those pages and letters to the editor. Marston has been assistant editorial page editor since 1997. Before joining The Ledger in 1993 as assistant news editor, he worked for nine years in a variety of newsroom capacities at The Daily Commercial in Leesburg, rising to managing editor. He began his newspaper career in 1980 as a reporter for the West Hernando News in Spring Hill. He lives in Bushnell with his wife, Carol, and their son.

John Meier (1980) manages Weikert Ford, Lake Wales.

Cyd Miller (1980) is an editorial and administrative specialist with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. He is based in Nairobi, Kenya and travels throughout Africa and Asia in his employment.

Donna Moore (1980) is a retail advertising manager at the News-Press in Fort Myers. Prior to her position at the News-Press, she worked in newspaper advertising at the Palm Beach Daily News and the Tampa Tribune. She has also held a number of positions in sales and management.

Patricia Moront-Figuero (1980) is a secondary and career education teacher for the School Board of Palm Beach. Prior to her position with the school board, she was a Spanish teacher, a media spokesperson for Delray Medical and the high school director of New England Tech and the Florida Culinary Institute.

Leslie Neilhouse (1980) is director of the U. S. Space Camp in Alabama.

Joe O’Neil (1980) is a Tampa-based columnist for Sunbelt Newspapers. Previously a media relations manager of USF and before that was an editor, associate editor or reporter for area newspapers and magazines.

Bruce Rolfsen (1980) is a senior writer for the Air Force Times in Springfield, Va. Prior to his position at The Times, he covered the Air Force for the Northwest Florida Daily News.

Steve Rupert (1980) is a circuit court mediator in Tampa.

Clinton Sells (1980) is a logistics supervisor at Quest Diagnostics in Tampa. He has worked in the same location for the last 21 years.

Michael (Mickey) Selz (1980) joined Farallon Capital Management in San Francisco in 2005. Previously, he worked for 20 years as a business journalist, the last 12 as a staff reporter at The Wall Street Journal, where he covered growth companies and entrepreneurs.

Dabney T. Smith (1980) was elected bishop coadjutor of the 33,000-member Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida in 2006. His election means he will eventually become the diocese’s bishop. A third-generation Episcopal priest, he previously was rector at the Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans and before that was rector at a Melbourne church. Prior to being ordained as a priest in 1987, he worked as an audio visual coordinator at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. He is married and has three children.

S. John Southerland (1980) sells airtime packages as an account executive for KCEC television, Denver's Univision affiliate.

Rojean Taylor (1980) is a producer of point-of-sale videos, business television broadcasts, radio and TV commercials and live special events for J.C. Penney in Plano, Texas. She worked for McCann-Erickson Advertising Agency in San Francisco for eight years.

Elizabeth Reilly Wells (1980) is the full-time mother of four children, who works part-time for her husband’s home business, Planetary Data Inc. in Georgia. Prior to her work with Planetary Data, she was a quality assurance manager for Dental Benefit Providers in Maryland and a tax auditor for the Florida Department of Revenue. She earned her master’s degree in accounting from Florida State University in 1993.

Laura L. Whiteside (1980) is an attorney in Tampa. In 2001, she joined the Advocacy Center for Persons with Disabilities and assists persons with disabilities to secure their civil rights. She previously represented children with disabilities in education matters. She also has represented news media, including the Tampa Tribune and WFLA television. She wrote the "Defamation and the Media" portion of the "Florida Bar Reporter's Handbook" from 1988 to 1995.

Stephen Williams (1980) is in sales and lives in Tampa Bay.

Joyce Braun Woloson (1980) works for the Morning Star World Outreach Center in Illinois.

Jordan Zimmerman (1980) is founder and chairman of Zimmerman Advertising, a Fort Lauderdale-based agency that is one of the largest ad agencies in the United States. In 2002, he received the School of Mass Communications Outstanding Alumnus Award and in 2008 he received the school’s top award: the Kappa Tau Alpha Hall of Fame Award. He is one of only two USF mass communications graduates to receive both the Alumnus and the KTA award.

Jean Bassick (1981) is a full-time student pursuing a career in building construction. Prior to going back to college, she worked for the airlines for 16 years.

Gwen A. Baumann (1981) is a teacher in the Plano Independent School District in Texas. She earned a law degree from University of Florida’s law school in 1984. She lives in Plano, Texas, and has two children.

Bruce Brodersen (1981) has worked for the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York for 14 years and is currently the director of multi-media. Prior to working at the Hall of Fame, he worked in New York City for eight years. He is the father of two children.

Carolyn Caldwell (1981) went to New York after graduating to work in theater as a stage manager. Today she works at Shaw's Restaurant and Inn in Lancaster, Ohio.

Sam J. Cardinale Jr. (1981), a senior reporter for the Ledger in Lakeland, has seen his work appear in the New York Times. Although he has won journalism and broadcasting awards, he is most proud of his reporting when it leads to positive changes in the community and state.

Linda J. Carlo (1981) is public relations manager for the Tampa Convention Center.

Ryan T. Conley (1981) is a business reporter for the Ocala Star-Banner. Prior to working for the Star-Banner, he was the editor for Wire to Wire Racing Digest and also worked at the Elkhart Truth Newspaper in Indiana.

Susannah Costello (1981) is director of communications at Mote Marie Lab and Aquarium in Sarasota. She has been a freelance writer, producer and creative director for a variety of corporate and non-profit organizations in the Tampa Bay area and the southeastern United States. She has won numerous Addy Awards plus two silver film festival awards, and is the author of a history of Florida Power.

Dennis Coxe (1981) is an instructional designer for General Physics in Connecticut. After spending seven years in newspaper journalism he earned a master’s degree in educational technology leadership from the George Washington University.

Jane Slaven Eddy (1981) is secretary/treasurer for Mikesel in Bountstown.

Mark Elias (1981) worked as a Tampa Tribune staff photographer and freelanced in New York before joining the Associated Press, Chicago, in 1983, where he stayed until 1994 when he opened his own photography business in Miami.

Warren Epstein (1981) works at the Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo., as a movie critic and TV columnist. He was a feature writer and Friday Extra! editor of the Tampa Tribune for seven years. His stories are at gazette.com.

Sharon Allen Espinola (1981) did corporate communications for a number of companies in Tampa, Atlanta and Princeton until 1994. She then freelanced in Puerto Rico for two years before coming back to Tampa as a communications consultant in 1996.

Tracy Kolody Fantaccione (1981) is the editor for Forum Publishing Group. Prior to her position as editor, she was the assisting managing editor for www.localbusiness.com and account supervisor for www.bitner.com. She has also held positions at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the South Florida Business Journal and the Stuart News.

Ivan Fielman (1981) is national sales manager for Penn-Plax in Garden City, N.Y. He is married and has four children.

Ann S. Freed (1981) is a public affairs officer in the U.S. Army, stationed in Hawaii. She worked in non-broadcast television production for the Florida Mental Health Institute and a securities company for 10 years prior to returning to active duty in 1987.

Fawn Germer (1981) is the author of "Hard Won Wisdom: More than 50 Extraordinary Women Mentor You to Find Self-Awareness, Perspective and Balance," published in 2001. She has worked as a Florida correspondent for both The Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report. She has been a staff writer for The Miami Herald, Denver's Rocky Mountain News and the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville. In addition, she was an editor for The Tampa Tribune. She holds a master's degree in journalism from the University of Florida.

Nancy B. Gibson (1981) is a counselor for First Call for Help of Broward County. She received her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Nova Southeastern University in 1992 and was licensed by the state of Florida as a mental health counselor in 2000.

Janice Schneider Girgenti (1981) teaches Feng Shui at Moore College of Art, Abington Art Center, Philadelphia Art Institute and others around Jenkintown, Pa.

Terry Greenhalgh (1981) is director of development for the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation in Tampa. Previously he worked for the Sun ‘n Fun Aviation Foundation in Lakeland and the Astronauts Memorial Foundation at the Kennedy Space Center.

Mark Guempel (1981) is a senior systems analyst for an aerospace firm. He worked as a medical/pharmaceutical advertising copywriter for two years, then he graduated from the Chubb Institute for computer technology.

Maggie Echazabal Hall (1981) is a communications specialist for Pinellas County. She is also the mother of four children.

Jan Hollingsworth (1981) is an environmental reporter at the Tampa Tribune.

David C. Jackson (1981) is a copy editor for the Monterey County Herald in California. Prior to his position in California, he worked as a reporter, copy editor and feature writer at Florida’s Vero Beach Press Journal for 19 years.

Joey Johnston (1981) is a reporter at the Tampa Tribune.

Kim Klein (1981) is the director of development and communications for Operation Brightside, a public/private partnership with the city of Louisville, KY.

Carol Lim (1981) is a full-time homemaker.

Karl R. Meinecke (1981) is a teacher of drama, mass communications and creative writing at Pinellas Park High School. He also served as Pinellas Park High School's yearbook adviser for 13 years (1986-87 through 1998-99) and also taught journalism and English during that period. Prior to teaching, he was a substitute teacher and an advertising graphic artist. He earned a language arts certification from USF in 1986.

Lynn Elikan Van Metre (1981) is a student in Austin, Texas. She jokes, "I’ve been from Tampa to Tacoma to Tucson to Texas."

Thomas Lee Overbey (1981) owns Sprint Photography and Computer Graphics, Tampa.

Steven Piantieri (1981) owns a wine bar, “Tastings: A Wine Experience,” in Orlando. He also owns and manages industrial warehouses, residential rentals and a motor sports company. In 2003 he competed in the Speed World Challenge Series.

Peter Lloyd Rinzivillo (1981) is a production coordinator for Image For Network. He owns Creative Media Productions, does radio and television voiceovers, on-hold messages, video presentations and jingles.

Nicole Sandler (1981) is the morning drive-time host for WINZ, a Clear Channel radio station in Miami. She worked at WUSF and WMNF radio during her years at USF. She left Tampa to move to New York City as a producer at WMCA and WPLJ radio. She left New York for Los Angeles, where she produced and hosted a variety of radio shows, including the KLOS “Morning Show” with Mark Thompson and Brian Phelps, which became a top-rated program in Los Angeles for several years. She moved from California to Taos, N.M., after adopting a daughter, then to South Florida, with a brief stay in Boston.

Michael "Mickey" Selz (1981) is a reporter and columnist for the Wall Street Journal.

Allen J. Solomon (1981) opened Copy-Graphics in Jacksonville Beach in 1995 after spending 15 years in newspaper editing and composing. As an entertainment editor, he earned three Florida Press Association awards.

Cynthia A. Spano (1981) has worked for the Home Shopping Network in St. Petersburg for 15 years and is the director of affiliate sales. She is accredited by PRSA.

Lawrence Stout (1981) is a writer and producer for Lawrence Stout Creative Services.

Debra Summer (1981) works for Florida’s Department of Education. She taught English and later traveled the world as a reporter and writer.

Lori London Snyder (1981) is the manager for Morise Art Gallery in Sarasota. Prior to joining her family business, the gallery, she worked in radio.

Ileana Varela Valle (1981) is a weekend anchor for WFOR television in Miami. Prior to working for WFOR television she worked at WPLG television in Miami, WTOG television in St. Petersburg and WTYM radio in Tampa. Richard Wallace (1981) is a senior voice analyst for Neuberger Berman, an asset management firm based in New York City. He earned a master of business administration degree in computer information systems from Baruch College in New York City. He is married and has two children.

Ronnie Stark Zabeline (1981) is a sales representative for Blackstone Legal Supplies in Fort Lauderdale.

Jennifer Moore Zecca (1981) is the manager of communication for IBM in Atlanta, Ga.

Al Bartolotta (1982) works as a transportation planner with the Pinellas County Planning Department. He earned his master’s in Public Administration from USF in 1990.

Sue Beck (1982) became a registered nurse in 1985, got married and moved to Texas, where she worked as a labor and delivery nurse. She and her husband and three children now reside in Wisconsin.

Rich Berube (1982) has sold radio and cable advertising, worked in politics and still finished his master's in health services administration. He is Tampa General's Florida Poison Center development and public affairs officer.

Rene E. Borroto (1982) is the senior editor and producer for Multivision Video and Film in Miami. He also is actively involved in DVD authoring, graphics design and animation, along with managing the company's cross-platform network of PCs and Macintosh computers. Prior to his position as senior editor, he was a freelance producer, writer and director for local and regional broadcasts and industrial projects. His previous experience was with Burdines' department stores (now Macy's) in the human resources department as the director of the video studio.

Lynne Freda Capobianco (1982) is an executive producer at WTVT television in Tampa. She has been married since 1992 and has a daughter named Casey.

Penny Carnathan (1982) is an assignment editor in the features department at the Tampa Tribune, responsible for religion, fashion, Hispanic affairs, home and garden, history and general assignment coverage. She has been with the Tribune and its defunct afternoon affiliate, the Tampa Times, for 22 years. She began work as a copy clerk while attending USF.

Diane Daniel (1982), a copy editor/freelance writer for the Boston Globe, worked on several Florida dailies and taught English in Europe before moving to Boston in 1989.

Paula DeNisco (1982) is an account executive for Baycare Healthcare in Tampa.

Brent Dietz (1982) is senior manager of public relations at Intersil Corporation, a communications chip company in Melbourne.

Lisa Diggins (1982) is the advertising manager for Greenwich Magazine. She has been in the communications business for 15 years and has worked at newspapers or magazines in Miami, Chicago and San Francisco. She has two boys and lives in Connecticut.

Art Dryce (1982) is president of Video Art Productions in Palm Harbor, which produces regional TV sports and national marketing videos.

Wayne Falsette (1982) is the vice president of American Reinsurance in San Francisco.

Paul J. Grossman (1982), president for the Grossman Group in Tampa, attended graduate school at Georgia State.

John Hamlin (1982) is a producer for ESPN. He won a Emmy award for the best television sports feature in 1989.

Lizz Harmon (1982) is president and chief executive officer of Harmon Tampa Public Relations. Clients include Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus, Disney on Ice and the Florida Orchestra.

Eric Hausmann (1982), assistant chief photojournalist, has been with Tampa's WFLA television since 1984.

Gretchen Beckham Jones Hunter (1982), employee services and EEO director, has been in human services with Jim Walter Corp. for 18 years.

Cheryl Jean-Claude (1982) is the media director for Kirshenbaum Bond and Partners in New York City.

Doria Yglesias Keller (1982) is a buyer with KBYTE Manufacturing in Tampa.

Pamela Smith Kamm (1982) lives in Ohio.

Tom Ketterer (1982) developed an expertise in medical and healthcare advertising and marketing. He works for Fresenius Medical Care in Tampa, as regional business development manager. He worked at an advertising agency for seven years and is the father of three children.

Susan Lamberti (1982) has worked for United Airlines for 17 years and lives.

Matt Larson (1982) works for the marketing department of the Tampa Tribune.

Ann Liguori (1982) owns her own production company and produces as well as hosts her own show, "Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori," the longest running sports interview show on television hosted by a woman. It is seen on Fox Sports regional cable networks throughout the country. She was named winner of the 1994 School of Mass Communications Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Loretta Chaplin Lombardo (1982) is marketing manager for Centex Homes in Tampa.

Zannie C. Mount (1982) has worked for WFTS television in Tampa since 1982 and is the program coordinator.

Roger Mullen (1982) has worked at the Tampa Tribune, Stuart News and Palm Beach Post. He now works as a humor columnist and feature writer at the Fayetteville, N.C., Observer Times.

Lisa Copeland Purcell (1982) is in charge of southeastern ad sales for SHOOT Magazine, a journal for TV commercial producers. Seven years ago she co-founded New Times, an alternative weekly in Miami.

Tari C. Peterson (1982) is an attorney in Tampa. She graduated from Stetson University College of Law in 1984. She adopted two children from China.

Terry Redding (1982) currently is a freelance writer working on his master's degree in anthropology at USF. After graduation, Terry worked briefly at the Tampa Tribune before spending several years working his way around the world.

Robert Reuben (1982) has worked as an investment banker for 15 years at Fahestock and Co. in New York City. He has two children and lives in Manhattan.

Tina Lorene Russo (1982) has worked for the Tampa Hillsborough County Public Library for more than two decades and is a senior librarian. She is also the department head of the Business and Government Department of the John F. Kennedy Public Library in downtown Tampa. She received her master’s degree in library science and information from USF in 1995.

Kerry L. Sanders (1982) is an NBC news correspondent. He covered the Gulf War and has spent a lot of time in Haiti. In 1991, he was the first recipient of the School of Mass Communications Outstanding Alumnus Award.

D. Steve Scales (1982) is the vice president of corporate accounts for the Campbell Soup Company in New Jersey. Prior to joining Campbell’s, he worked for Nestle Foodservice where he held a variety of field sales management positions.

Sandy J. Scheers (1982) is a full-time homemaker and lives in Coral Springs.

Barry Shapiro (1982) is a programmer and analyst for Georgia Pacific in the Atlanta area. Three months after graduation from USF, he became a staff photographer for the Marietta Daily Journal in Georgia. He went on to become chief photographer, and in 2000, left the newspaper to become a programmer.

Catherine A. Steele (1982) died in October 2005. She was a senior research associate for the McGinn Group in northern Virginia and had published research in a number of journals. Prior to joining the McGinn Group, she was a professor at Syracuse University and worked as a senior research adviser at AARP. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in mass communications and a doctorate in mass communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Laurle Defrain Stemm (1982) worked for an advertising agency for 10 years and now is the mother of two children.

Kathleen Davis Sturgis (1982) is the president of Capital Consulting in North Carolina. She earned a master’s degree from USF in 1985 and a doctorate in communications from the University of Illinois in 1997.

Theodore R. Swing Jr. (1982) is sports editor for Hernando Today in Brooksville.

Cynthia O. Tickell (1982) worked for the USF Florida Mental Health Institute from 1982 to 2000. She lives in Tampa.

Amy Walgren (1982) is the president of Walgren Communications. Prior to starting her own public relations company, she worked as a field marketing manager in Chicago for Walt Disney World. She has two daughters and lives in Illinois.

Janice Mendell Welch (1982) writes copy freelance from her home in Lakeland.

Donald Wood (1982) is a Pinellas County-based producer and writer for independent television productions. He produces 30-minute programming seen on cable’s Court TV and the Food Network. His work includes “Forensic Files,” “Food Finds,” “Food Fight” and the “World’s Most Unusual Foods” segments. For eight years previously he was a television news producer and for 10 years before that he managed public and media relations for non-profit organizations.

Jill Carpenter Voorhis (1982) owns Extra! Extra! Graphics, a commercial printing company in St. Petersburg. She has been engaged in graphic design since 1984.

Laura Lionetti Barton (1983) is the president of LLB Communications Inc. in Tampa. She worked for WFTS television in Tampa and Fox Broadcasting in Los Angeles. She has taught broadcast writing at USF as an adjunct instructor.

Mary Ellen Burke Bianco (1983) is an editor for J. Walter Thompson Specialized Communications and is a remote site worker, working from home. Prior to her position as editor, she worked in magazine circulation, marketing, and advertising, was a newsletter editor and also a writer. She has two daughters and lives in Kentucky.

Barbara Shane Boone (1983) is a teacher in the Brevard County school system in Melbourne.

Lisa Portnoy Branigan (1983) is vice president of media services at Zimmerman Advertising, a Fort Lauderdale-based agency.

Stephen R. Buckanavage (1983) is senior product manager for Zeneca Pharmaceuticals in Wilmington, Del.

Joseph Costa (1983) is president, writer and producer of Not Your Average Joe Inc., an advertising writing and production company in Tampa. He has worked at Macy’s, the Tampa Tribune, the Florida Lottery and Ellis & Diaz Advertising.

Cassandra Dudick Dakan (1983) is an executive assistant at Bay Area School Reform Collaborative. She worked in advertising agencies and did public relations for Camp Fire Boys and Girls. She is the mother of one girl.

Marcia Lynn Davis (1983) is a high school teacher in Pinellas County. After graduation, she joined the St. Petersburg Times but left to go to graduate school at USF to become a special education teacher. She is married with a daughter.

Nancy Hughes Diamond (1983) is a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines. After graduation she married an Air Force pilot who now works for American Airlines. They live in Fort Myers and have two children.

Tony Fabrizio (1983) is a senior sports writer at the Tampa Tribune.

Valorie Thomas Ferraro (1983) is president of Bauer Event Solutions in Tampa.

Kim Welker Ford (1983) is a development manager for Electronic Data Systems in Plano, Texas.

Lori Sutherland Franklin (1983) is a school media specialist in Olathe, Kan. She worked for several years as a newspaper reporter/photographer. She received a master’s in library science from Florida State University in 1996.

Colette Harper (1983) is a corporate account manager for Verizon Wireless in Tampa. She was a president’s cabinet winner in both 2003 and 2002, signifying that she achieved the top one percent in sales in the United States for Verizon Wireless. She worked at WTOG television until going into wireless communication sales in 1986.

Debra Merskin (1983) is an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon in Eugene. After finishing her bachelor’s degree, she became a broadcast media buyer for W. B. Doner and Company in St. Petersburg. After two years at Doner she became a media director for another St. Petersburg ad agency and later for a Tampa agency. She joined the UO in 1993 and teaches advertising among other subjects. Gregory Kenneth Schnitt (1983) is a sales manager for Ryerson Tull Steel in Clifton, N.J. He worked in television and advertising for over four years before becoming an international steel trader. He has traveled extensively and completed several marathons.

Martha Smith Stone (1983) is training director of the Ifra Newsplex at the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies at the University of South Carolina. A former newspaper and magazine journalist, she began to write about the Internet industry in 1995 and became an international Internet industry consultant. She has written three books about the topic for media organizations.

Douglas M. Taylor (1983), vice president of marketing for Cross Tec Corp. in Boca Raton, worked as the general manager for WFIT-FM in Melbourne and was the public relations director for the Melbourne/Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce in 1991.

Richard Tettener (1983) is the sports director for WWLP television, a division of Lin Broadcasting, in Westfield, Mass. He is a 12-time recipient of the Associated Press Best Sportscaster Award and has co-hosted the Children’s Miracle Network since 1989. He is married and has three children.

Terry Tomalin (1983), outdoors editor, the St. Petersburg Times, did investigative reporting for a number of Florida papers before taking off to New Zealand and Australia for a year. He worked at the Lakeland Ledger and received many awards, including the Florida Sports Writers Association’s Feature Writing Award. Now that he's back, he tries to surf as much as possible.

Simone Walters-March (1983) is a Pembroke Pines-based free-lance production manager and coordinator for movies, advertisements and music videos. After graduation, she won the Ms. Jamaica Fashion Model contest and modeled for three years. She was a flight attendant for Air Jamaica for nine years. She is the mother of two children.

Amy Goldberg Tardif (1987) is the news director for WGCU television and its radio counterpart in Fort Myers. She is also the managing editor of a half-hour environmental documentary aired each month on WGCU. Prior to her position as news director, she was a host, reporter and producer with the National Public Radio affiliate in Fort Myers for 10 years.

Jennie Susi Taylor (1987) is a library media specialist in Miami. After graduating, she worked in the Miami Herald’s advertising department as an account executive for 10 years and then became a teacher.

Lorie Briggs (1988) is vice president of community relations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. She previously worked for United Way for six years.

Martha Bone (1988) is a producer for WUSF television at the University of South Florida. She won a regional Emmy award for a 1999 science documentary about medical marijuana that aired on WUSF, one of 13 public television stations in Florida.

Zarrin T. Caldwell (1988) is the issues and research coordinator for the International Association for Religious Freedom in Oxford in the United Kingdom. He worked for a public relations agency in Washington, D.C., for three years. After receiving a master’s degree in public and international affairs, he returned to Washington to work in the area of foreign policy for more than four years. He married in 1999 and moved to Great Britain in 2000.

Melanie Morose Edelstein (1988) is a California-based writer and television producer. She began free-lancing for NBC News in 1996 and has produced numerous segments for them, including the Sydney Olympics coverage, the O.J. Simpson case and the Rodney King riots. She won an Emmy for Best California Midday Newscast in 1993 and has three children.

John Fiorillo (1988) is senior editor for SeaFood Business Magazine in Seattle.

Michele Myers Francis (1988) works for Custom Deco, a company that makes glass and ceramic decorations. She has three children.

David Glaser (1988) is public relations coordinator for Hospice of Southwest Florida and also publishes the USF-focused sports Web site USFBullsEYE.com. Prior to joining Hospice, he spent three years as public affairs coordinator at USF's Sarasota-Manatee/New College campus and more than a decade as a sports journalist with the St. Petersburg Times and Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Brian Huckbay (1988) is a production manager for Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta and a non-linear editor for Whoa! Films. Prior to his position with Turner Broadcasting, he was a corporate video producer for a variety of companies.

Andrea Whitaker Ireland (1988) is a full-time homemaker and a mother of two in Rochester, N.Y. Prior to having children, she spent a brief time in advertising sales for the Miami Herald, acted as a publishing manager for a Washington, D.C., professional trade organization and as a media consultant, primarily in media research, planning and buying for a New York media buying group.

Brian A. Iten (1988) is the assistant state attorney in Bradenton. He graduated from Florida State University College of Law, receiving a juris doctor degree in 1994. Prior to his position with the state attorney’s office, he was an inspector for the Bureau of Tobacco and Firearms.
