Mass Communications Faculty Vacancies

  • Faculty Position.  The University of South Florida School of Mass Communications invites applications for a full-time tenure-earning assistant professor position in advertising at the USF Tampa campus beginning in August 2008. This is a nine-month position. The salary is competitive, to be determined by experience and education. The position is contingent on final funding approval.

    Minimum Qualifications.  An appropriate doctoral degree is required as is significant professional advertising experience and the ability to teach general undergraduate and graduate advertising courses such as media strategy, management, research, interactive and digital advertising media, and new media production. Scholarly research and publication are required, as are student advising and service to the profession. The position requires evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching, research and service. Applicants with doctoral degrees completed between Aug. 7, 2008, and Aug. 7, 2009, will be considered for initial employment at the rank of instructor.

It is one of Florida's top three research universities and was awarded more than $300 million in research contracts and grants last year. USF offers 219 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine, and serves more than 45,000 students on campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland. The School of Mass Communications, housed in a $10 million building completed in 1992 and located in the 13th largest television market in the nation, is certified by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The school offers a bachelor of arts degree in mass communications through four undergraduate sequences:  advertising, journalism, public relations and telecommunications. Undergraduate enrollment, which is limited to students who meet a GPA standard and pass a qualifying examination, is approximately 1,500 majors, about 400 of whom are in the advertising track. A master of arts degree in mass communications can be earned in one of three studies tracks—media studies, multimedia journalism and strategic communication management. Approximately 50 students are enrolled in graduate study. There are 19 full-time faculty members with a broad range of professional and scholarly credentials.

  • Guest Faculty Position. The University of South Florida School of Mass Communications invites applications for the position of James A. Clendinen Professor in Editorial and Critical Writing. Clendinen served the Tampa Tribune for 50 years, including 25 years as editor and more than a decade as editorial board chairman. He was president of the National Conference of Editorial Writers in 1966. After Clendinen died in 1991, his employer, friends and family endowed a professorship in his name. The NCEW Foundation also supports the professorship. Previous Clendinen professors include three former NCEW presidents and the winner of a Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing.     Responsibilities. The Clendinen Professor teaches "Critical Writing: Editorials, Reviews, Columns" to selected USF undergraduates three times a week from Jan. 24 until Feb. 26, 2008. The course description is: "Interpretive and opinion writing for the mass media. Analysis and discussion of current events as a basis for critical thinking and editorial writing; evaluation of editorial pages of leading newspapers. Study of journalistic techniques involved in personal columns." The Clendinen Professor also makes a presentation at the university on a topic related to editorial and commentary writing.

    Minimum Qualifications and Compensation. The position requires an appropriate bachelor’s degree at the minimum, significant professional experience in editorial writing and evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching. The Clendinen Professor’s stipend is $5,000. In addition, the Clendinen Professor will receive reimbursement for round-trip transportation to Tampa and for a car rental while in Florida and will be provided free housing at a nearby hotel for the duration of the course. A university office, a computer, and secretarial and research support also are provided.

    Responsibilities. Adjuncts teach a variety of undergraduate courses in advertising, journalism, public relations and telecommunications.

    Minimum Qualifications. An appropriate master’s degree is required as is significant professional experience. Appropriate degrees include those in advertising, journalism, mass communications, public relations and telecommunications from regionally accredited colleges and universities. For some course assignments, degrees in communications, English and law are appropriate.
