Vision, Mission and Teaching Philosophy
Vision: The School of Mass Communications seeks to establish a reputation for excellence at the University of South Florida and among peer programs and practicing professionals throughout the United States for the teaching and study of mass communications.
Mission: The mission of the School of Mass Communications has four components. The first component is to prepare undergraduates to succeed in their various fields of endeavor--advertising, journalism, public relations or telecommunications--and to continue their professional and scholarly development through continuing educational pursuits. The school also seeks to provide graduate students with opportunities for advanced studies that form the basis for continuing scholarship and enhanced professional performance. In addition, the school seeks to engage in scholarship, creative activity and professional activities that contribute to the body of knowledge of mass communications and the practice of the various specialties in the field. Finally, the school's mission is to contribute to the enhancement of liberal arts education at the University of South Florida.
Teaching Philosophy: The school is committed to teaching history, ethics, legal principles, and contemporary media principles, problems, issues and structures. These subjects are offered in highly specialized courses and in more general courses. Graduates are well-educated communicators who are ready to make significant contributions to society and who will be leaders in their professions.
As a result of the school's vision, mission and teaching philosophy, School of Mass Communications faculty members have professional experience and academic degrees representing a variety of disciplines including advertising, broadcasting, communications, journalism, English, history, law, mass communications, public relations, and telecommunications.
