Students who want to major in mass communications will be accepted into the program
when the following has been successfully completed:
- Complete at least 30 semester hours of courses including at least 15 semester hours
for which grades and a grade point average have been awarded
- 2.75 GPA or better on all attempted college work
- C or better in freshman English courses (ENC 1101 and 1102)
- Score at least 60 (of 100) points on the school's English diagnostic test
Students transferring from a four-year university may transfer up to 15 semester
hours in mass communications courses.
Students transferring from a community/junior college may transfer no more than
nine semester hours in mass communication courses.
All transfer students must complete MMC 2100 Writing for Mass Media and MMC 3602 Mass Communications and Society (or the transfer equivalents) before taking any other USF mass communications courses. Students who transfer with MMC 2100 or its equivalent from another institution must pass the school's English Diagnostic Test with a score of at least 70 points, the same score required to pass MMC 2100 at USF.
English Diagnostic Test Requirement
The mass communications curriculum requires strong language skills, and this test
helps determine whether students are ready for this rigorous program.
The test is 100 questions and covers complete/incomplete sentences, word use, punctuation, verb use, pronoun use and awkward constructions (misplaced modifiers, lack of parallelism, faulty comparisons) and spelling.
There are several ways to review for this test. There are dozens of good grammar
study guides available in libraries and bookstores. William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White's
classic book, "The Elements of Style," offers a brief but comprehensive
read. In addition, you can take a practice test to gauge
whether you are prepared to take the test.
